Net Free Ventilating Area (NFVA) Calculator
Estimate the attic net free ventilating area required for a vented attic floor, then split it into intake (low, at the eaves) and exhaust (high, near the ridge) targets.
The base ratio is 1/150. The IRC requires at least 1 ft² of net free ventilating
area for every 150 ft² of the vented space. The reduced 1/300 ratio is an
exception, not the basic rule: it applies only where the required area is balanced between high
and low vents — roughly 40–50% in the upper portion of the attic, at least 3 ft above the eave
vents, with the rest at the eaves — or where a Class I or II vapour retarder is installed on the
warm-in-winter side of the ceiling in the cold climate zones (6, 7 and 8). Local amendments,
manufacturer instructions and the assembly itself control the legal requirement. This is a
planning estimate; confirm with your building department and a licensed professional.

Practical notes
- Balance matters: blocked soffits with a long ridge vent often underperform.
- Insulation baffles (rafter vents) keep the intake path open at the eaves.
- Powered fans are not a drop-in substitute for continuous net free area.
- Cathedral and vaulted assemblies are detailed differently — ask a professional.
